Come late spring 2008 Materials Testing, along with the Pharmaceutical and Forensic departments, will be moving to a new ActLabs facility - spacious 2,000 square feet of newly constructed laboratory in a large, modern building, directly adjacent to the current main ActLabs facility at 1336 Sandhill Drive, Ancaster. We are looking forward to all the new opportunities a bigger space will create for Materials Testing, and in the meantime, we watch with excitement as the consecutive stages of the lab's construction progresses. Standards Council of Canada audited Activation Laboratories Inc. in May 2007 as a part of the SCC accreditation requirement. Materials Testing expanded the scope of the accredited test methods and procedures, adding more tests to the already rich arsenal. As demanding as audits are – we are pleased with the results and with the improved practices they invariably stimulate.

The Axios XRF analyzer is the latest addition to the Activation Laboratories' arsenal of analytical instruments. Axios is a wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescent spectrometer suitable for accurate and sensitive elemental analysis of solids and liquids. As it was with the ActLabs older XRF instrument, the main application of this instrument will be geological chemistry, however we will also perform testing of materials such as plastics, metals and ceramics. We also plan to use Axios for elemental analysis of catalysts, pigments, flame-retardants, (UV)-stabilizers, and additives that are based on elements such as copper, zinc, iron, titanium, bromine, phosphorus and antimony. Considering that X-ray fluorescence is non-destructive and more environmentally friendly than the classical wet-chemical analysis, we are looking forward to developing a full portfolio of metal alloys and other XRF applications in Materials Testing.
