2002 - High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (HR ICP MS)

In 2002, Actlabs acquired one of the first commercially available High Resolution magnetic sector ICP/MS instruments.  This technology allows us to have better detection limits than a quadruple ICP/MS by 1 - 2 orders of magnitude and resolves most interferences.  As a result, this instrument increased our geochronology capabilities.  Applications were also developed to perform trace element speciation in clinical, biological, geological and environmental samples by connecting either a Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) or High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) instrument to the HR ICP MS.  As well, with this technology, we also developed the ability to detect gold and other trace elements in water and snow samples.  This was a major advancement in the hydrogeochemistry field.

Laser Ablation technology was later added as a sample introduction system for the HR-ICP/MS allowing for the selective ionization of mineral grains for elemental analysis at ultra trace levels.
